The retreat shown here is the American withdrawal from Long Island in late August 1776, when General George Washington's army, after its defeat in the Battle of Long Island, slipped across the East River to Manhattan under cover of darkness and fog. This 1899 chromolithograph was issued by the Werner Company of Akron, Ohio, a firm known for its patriotic and military-themed color prints sold in large numbers at the close of the nineteenth century. Its date reflects the period's renewed interest in the Revolution during the centenary era, when artists often romanticized the hardships of the Continental Army. Viewers should note that the scene is a later artistic interpretation rather than an eyewitness record.
