Dated July 4, 1776, this print takes its title from the day the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, though most delegates did not sign the engrossed copy until August. Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, before his partnership with James Merritt Ives, when the firm was still his alone. The subject shows how Americans in the mid-19th century remembered the Revolution, treating the Declaration as a founding moment of national identity. Its hand coloring was typical of the many inexpensive lithographs that Currier sold to ordinary households.
