Rather than the signing or the battles, this Currier & Ives lithograph focuses on the committee of five that Congress appointed in June 1776 to draft the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson did most of the writing, and Congress revised the committee's text before adopting it on July 4, 1776. Published in New York in 1876, the print appeared during the nation's centennial, when Americans looked back on their founding and images of its origins sold well to a broad public.
