Nathaniel Currier's 1847 hand-colored lithograph presents Benjamin Franklin not as a battlefield figure but as a statesman and philosopher, the two roles that defined his public life and that make him a natural fit for a gallery of Revolutionary War images. Currier, who would soon join with James Merritt Ives to form one of the best-known print publishers of the nineteenth century, produced such portraits for a popular market eager for national heroes. Franklin had been dead for about forty-three years by 1847, and his reputation had grown into a symbol of American ingenuity, diplomacy and republican virtue. Collectors today value these hand-colored sheets for how they show a public memory of the founders taking shape.
