Published in Boston around 1875, this color lithograph, drawn by Henry A. Thomas and issued by C. Frank King, depicts the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775, during the first months of the Revolutionary War. Although the battle takes its name from Bunker Hill, most of the fighting took place on nearby Breed's Hill, where British troops suffered heavy casualties before taking the position. The print appeared a century after those events, as interest in Revolutionary sites and memory was growing in New England, and it reflects how Americans of that era chose to picture the conflict.
