The surrender at Yorktown in October 1781 effectively ended major fighting in the Revolution, as British forces under Lord Cornwallis laid down their arms after a siege by Washington's Continental Army and French allies. Cornwallis did not attend the ceremony himself, sending Brigadier General Charles O'Hara in his place, a gesture that added to the day's drama. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph around 1845, when Revolutionary subjects appealed to buyers who wanted patriotic scenes for their homes.
