Currier's hand-colored lithograph shows the moment the British army laid down its arms at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781, a result that effectively ended major fighting in the American Revolution. The surrender followed a siege in which combined American and French forces, under George Washington and Comte de Rochambeau, closed in on Lord Cornwallis's army after a French fleet under the Comte de Grasse had cut off its escape by sea. The print was issued by Nathaniel Currier around 1846, decades after the event, when lithographs like this one were popular for filling parlor walls with scenes of national history.
