Here Washington is shown at the Trenton bridge, where a triumphal arch greeted him in April 1789 as he rode toward New York for his inauguration as the first President. Young women in white, strewing flowers before him, are the scene's most distinctive feature, and the event became a favorite subject for later printmakers. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph around 1845, when the Revolutionary generation had passed and Americans were increasingly drawn to sentimental images of the nation's founding. The print shows how that nostalgia turned a local welcome into a patriotic tableau.
