Painted by E. Percy Moran and titled *The First Resistance*, this image shows British soldiers as the subject, a reminder that the Revolutionary War often appeared in popular art from the British side of the conflict. This color halftone dates to about 1911, when the process let painted scenes be reproduced cheaply in large numbers. The print carries a copyright notice naming Red Wing Advertising Company of Red Wing, Minnesota, which shows how commercial publishers distributed such images to a wide public. Moran was known for historical genre scenes of colonial and Revolutionary America, so the picture also reflects how early twentieth-century Americans imagined their nation's founding.
