Three New York militiamen, John Paulding, David Williams and Isaac Van Wart, stopped British Major John André near Tarrytown on September 23, 1780, and found plans for the surrender of West Point hidden in his stockings. André had met with Benedict Arnold to arrange the handover, and his capture exposed the plot and sent Arnold fleeing to the British. Currier & Ives issued this color lithograph around 1876, the centennial of the Revolution, when the firm was producing many patriotic scenes for a public eager to revisit the war.
