Rather than a battle or a building, this color lithograph shows uniforms of the independent companies, the volunteer militia units that formed in colonial towns before and during the Revolution. Printed in New York around 1891 by G.H. Buek & Co. from a design credited to H.A. Ogden, it reflects late nineteenth-century interest in the Army's own past. The copyright notice names Brig. Gen. S.B. Holabird, then the Army's Quartermaster General. Plates like this helped officers, historians and costume-makers picture colonial dress, and they show how closely many of these companies followed European fashions in their colors, facings and cut.
