Newburgh, on the Hudson, was one of the places Washington made his headquarters as the Continental Army held the Hudson Valley in the final years of the Revolution. The title dates the scene to 1780, but the site is most closely tied to the army's encampments in the region in the early 1780s, when the river was a vital link for moving troops and supplies. This hand-colored lithograph was issued by N. Currier in New York, a firm that produced many popular views of Revolutionary sites for a general audience. Its scenic composition and bright color reflect that commercial market more than any eyewitness record.
