Rather than a battlefield scene, this hand-colored lithograph turns to Washington's private life and appears to show him at the center of his family. Nathaniel Currier's New York firm issued many sheets like this between the 1830s and 1850s, when printed images of Revolutionary leaders were a popular way for households to display national pride. Scenes of Washington at home reflected a wider nineteenth-century habit of remembering the first president for virtue, domestic stability and the republic's founding values, not only for his campaigns. The hand coloring, applied to each impression, gave these inexpensive prints their bright, individual look.
