Few early views of the capital were printed with captions in three languages, and this hand-colored lithograph from Nathaniel Currier's New York shop titles its scene in English, French and German. It looks across Washington from the grounds of the President's House, the building later known as the White House. In 1848 the city was still sparse, and the Washington Monument was rising slowly and remained unfinished, so the print offers a useful glimpse of an unfinished capital. Its bright hand coloring was typical of Currier's inexpensive views, which were made for a broad popular market.
