Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1874 was one of the largest cotton textile cities in the country, with its mill buildings lined up along the Merrimack River and the canals that carried its water power. Large corporations such as the Merrimack and Boott mills employed thousands, and the city's population had passed 40,000 by 1870, with many Irish and French Canadian families working the looms and spindles. The Boston and Lowell Railroad linked the city to Boston, bringing raw cotton in and shipping finished cloth out. Daily life centered on the mill shifts, the churches, and the boarding-house streets near the factory gates, and residents knew their city as a place where river power and mill labor had built everything around them.
