Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1910 was a city of more than 100,000 people, and its textile mills were still running at full strength on the Merrimack River. Electric power had begun to supplement the old water-driven wheels, and the mills' brick ranks stretched for blocks along the river. Civic life was shaped by the mill shifts, with Irish, French Canadian, Greek, and other immigrant families living in the tenements close to the factory gates. The Lowell Textile School, founded in 1897, trained young men for jobs in the mills, and residents of the period took pride in a city that had grown from a planned industrial town into one of the nation's largest manufacturing centers.
