Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1910 remained one of New England's leading shoe manufacturing cities, with the trade still the main employer for men and women working along the Merrimack. Shoe shops had spread beyond the older riverside mills, and many families lived in multi-family tenements within walking distance of the workrooms. Electric trolleys had joined the steam railroad as the way people moved between mill neighborhoods, outlying villages, and the downtown stores on Merrimack Street. The city also claimed the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, born on a farm in the nearby countryside, and his name came up often at local schools and civic occasions. Residents of the period would have known Haverhill first as a place of leather, lasts, and whistles marking the shift changes.
