Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1910 was a city of many languages, its streets home to families who had arrived from Italy, Ireland, French Canada, and Eastern Europe over the previous two decades. The shoe trade still paid the most wages, but men also found work in the building trades, in a growing number of small shops, and in the crews that kept the Merrimack's mills and dams running. Newcomers formed their own parishes and mutual benefit societies, so that a Sunday Mass or a neighborhood hall might be heard in several tongues on a single block. Residents crossed the river's bridges daily, linking the downtown with the neighborhoods on the far bank, where wagons, trolleys, and pedestrians moved between home and work.
