In 1910, Leicester Center sat in the hill country of Worcester County, Massachusetts, a farming and mill town that drew much of its livelihood from small manufactories along its streams and from the market at nearby Worcester. The village was also known for Leicester Academy, a private school founded in 1784 that had educated young men from across New England for more than a century. Residents of the town lived with the rhythms of the New England seasons, of church and town meeting, and of a slow shift from water-powered textile work toward newer factories and electric trolleys that made the trip to Worcester shorter. A photograph taken here in 1910 captures a community that was still largely rural in character but increasingly linked to the wider industrial economy of central Massachusetts.
