This is a photograph of a painting, not a scene taken from life. The canvas, titled *The flower girl*, is signed G. Hitchcock, the American painter who spent much of his career in the Netherlands. Its subject, a young woman with flowers, belongs to the Dutch genre scenes that drew American and European artists to fishing villages and rural towns in the late 1800s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative around 1905, reproduced paintings like this one for wide sale, so the picture preserves a work that many viewers would otherwise never have seen. Hitchcock's paintings of Dutch working women are worth noticing for their soft light and close attention to everyday labor.
