Marie Curie, the physicist who discovered radium with her husband Pierre, is the subject here, shown in profile as she stepped off the S.S. Olympic in New York. Her 1921 arrival was the first of her two American tours, undertaken to raise money for radium research, and it drew enormous press attention. Crowds and reporters met her at the pier, and the visit helped secure a gram of radium for her laboratory in Paris, a gift from American donors.
