Oklahoma became the 46th state in 1907, and by 1909 the Cheyenne and Arapaho people of the western part of the territory were living with land allotment, which followed the 1892 opening of their reservation to settlers. The Sun Dance, a central summer ceremony of Cheyenne religious life, had been banned by federal officials in 1883 under the Code of Indian Offenses, and agency staff continued to watch for such gatherings. Farming, cattle work, and wage labor near the new railroad towns shaped daily life for families who had once followed the buffalo across the plains. This photograph of a Cheyenne sun dancer records a religious man whose practice was officially forbidden at the time.
