Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young oil town that had grown up within the Cherokee Nation, only three years after Oklahoma became a state in 1907. The Nellie Johnstone No. 1 well, brought in in 1897, had drawn drillers, supply merchants, and land speculators to the Caney River valley, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with the oil field around it. Refineries, pipeline connections, and the railroad that served the area made oil the main business, while farming and small shops supplied the growing population. Residents of the period would have known Bartlesville as an oil boomtown, where new derricks rose near Main Street and the rapid arrival of workers strained housing, schools, and local government.
