Oklahoma City in 1910 was a young town. It had been settled in a single day during the Land Run of 1889, and it had grown quickly on the strength of railroads, cattle and grain shipping, and the trade that flowed through its stockyards. Oklahoma had become a state only three years earlier, in 1907, and the legislature's decision to make Oklahoma City the permanent seat of government, which took effect in 1910, gave the city new political weight and fueled rival boosting from other towns. Residents of the period would have known it as a fast-expanding rail and livestock center on the prairie, where new streets, churches, and business blocks were rising faster than the older frontier settlement could keep pace with.
