Guthrie, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young railroad town that had been staked out in the Land Run of April 1889, when thousands of settlers claimed lots in a single day. It served as the capital of Oklahoma Territory and then, after statehood in November 1907, as the state capital, with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line carrying grain, cotton, and livestock from the surrounding farm country. That year the town was fighting to keep the seat of government, as voters weighed a move to Oklahoma City, a contest that would be decided that autumn. Residents who looked out over their brick business blocks and church spires would have known Guthrie as the place where the new state's government sat, and they were anxious about what losing that title would mean for the town's prospects.
