Blackwell, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young railroad town on the former Cherokee Outlet, settled in the land run of September 1893 and only three years into statehood. Its growth depended on the Santa Fe line, which moved wheat and cattle from the surrounding prairie to market, and grain elevators and freight yards anchored its commercial life. Farm prices, harvest weather, and freight rates shaped the fortunes of merchants and families alike. Churches, lodges, schools, and the business streets near the rails gave residents their social world. To people living there, Blackwell was a grain and shipping town on the edge of Oklahoma's farm country.
