Newkirk, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young railroad and farming town in Kay County, about seventeen years after the September 1893 opening of the Cherokee Outlet. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line that gave the town its start still tied it to wheat and grain markets, and grain elevators and shipping yards were central to daily work. Oklahoma had become a state only three years earlier, in 1907, so local residents were still settling into new county and town government, building schools and churches, and arguing over the first permanent civic institutions. Most families had come from Kansas, Missouri, and Texas, and they measured the town's progress by its new streets, its depot, and the steady arrival of settlers claiming land on the prairie beyond its edges.
