Ponca City, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young railroad town on the former Cherokee Outlet, land opened to settlement in a run in September 1893. Oklahoma had become a state only three years earlier, in 1907, and local leaders were busy putting up the schools, churches and public buildings that a new county seat needed. Trade depended on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line, which hauled wheat and cattle out of the surrounding prairie and brought in lumber, machinery and new settlers. The oil discovery of 1911 that would remake the town was still ahead, so residents in 1910 knew Ponca City mainly as a farm trading center on the prairie.
