Ponca City in 1928 was an oil town, and its growth since the strikes that followed 1911 had carried it far beyond the prairie trading post it had been. Marland Oil and Continental Oil drew drilling crews, pipeline men and refinery workers into the city, and their payrolls shaped its shops, banks and hotels. E.W. Marland was raising a large Italian Renaissance-style mansion on a hill above town, a visible sign of how much money the wells had brought in. The town still carried the name of the Ponca people, who had been moved onto a reservation in the area in the 1870s, and many residents of 1928 would have known Ponca City first as a company town of derricks and refineries.
