Drumright, Oklahoma, was a raw oil town in 1914, only a few years removed from the strikes that turned the surrounding Creek Nation countryside into one of the busiest oil districts in the country. The Cushing field boom of 1912 drew wildcatters, drillers, teamsters, and merchants who put up derricks and frame storefronts faster than any water or street system could keep pace. Oklahoma had become a state in 1907, so local government and business were still taking shape, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with every new well and every change in crude prices. Residents in 1914 knew Drumright first as an oil camp, where a single good well could double a population overnight and bring saloons, boarding houses, and new churches along the same dusty streets.
