Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1910 was a young town of roughly 18,000 people, still only three years into Oklahoma's statehood in 1907 and not much more than a generation removed from its founding as a settlement in the Creek Nation. The Glenn Pool oil field, discovered just south of the city in 1905, had turned Tulsa into a boomtown of drilling crews, supply houses, and land speculators, and the rail lines of the Frisco and Katy railroads carried both equipment and workers in. Downtown streets like Main and Second were lined with new commercial buildings, hotels, and banks financing the oil trade. Residents of the day would have known Tulsa as a fast-growing oil center, a place whose fortunes rose and fell with each new well.
