Drumright, in Creek County, Oklahoma, was a raw oil boomtown in 1914, only a few years after oil was struck in the surrounding fields around 1912. Derricks and drilling rigs crowded the land around the new town, and the work drew roadhouse keepers, teamsters, roughnecks, and merchants who needed supplies faster than anyone could build them. Oklahoma had become a state only in 1907, so local government and civic institutions were still taking shape as the population surged. The panorama records a town of wooden storefronts and hastily raised buildings, with the oil business visibly setting the pace of daily life.
