In 1909, Chickasha, Oklahoma, was a railroad and farm-trade town of about seventeen years' standing, two years after Oklahoma became a state. The Rock Island line had brought the townsite to life in 1892, and cotton, grown on the surrounding prairie and bales hauled to the depots and gins, gave the town much of its commercial life. Civic energy in those early statehood years centered on new schools and churches, and the state's new women's college, which had opened in Chickasha in 1908, drew students and attention to the town. Residents of the period would have known Chickasha as a county seat and a rail stop where farm families came to trade, bank, and meet on Saturdays.
