Miami, in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, sat at the center of the Tri-State lead and zinc district in 1909, just two years after Oklahoma became a state in 1907. The town's economy rested on ore dug from shallow workings across Ottawa County, and the mining boom had drawn miners and merchants from neighboring Missouri and Kansas. Mills crushed and concentrated the ore, and the sending of finished product out by rail tied the district to larger markets. The chat piles of waste rock left behind by milling were a familiar sight around town. For the men who worked the diggings, Miami was known first as a mining camp, and its growth depended on how well the lead and zinc sold.
