Cheyenne and Arapaho families camped on the western Oklahoma prairie in 1909, two years after Oklahoma had become the 46th state in November 1907. Their reservation had been opened to white settlement in the 1892 land run and then divided into individual allotments under federal policy, so much of the land around them now belonged to homesteaders and cattle operations. Agency headquarters near Darlington and the rations and annual payments tied to it drew people together for periodic gatherings, and the cattle economy, railroads, and new towns were reshaping daily life nearby. In a state only two years old, a large encampment like this one reflected the older social and ceremonial life that continued alongside allotment, town building, and statehood politics.
