Tulsa in 1908 was a young town of only a few thousand people, barely two decades removed from its founding as a Creek Nation settlement near the Arkansas River. Its fortunes were tied to the railroads that crossed the area, and the Frisco and Midland Valley lines had helped turn it into a shipping point for cattle, cotton, and grain. Oklahoma had become a state in November 1907, so the town was adjusting to new state and county government while its merchants and oil promoters looked ahead to the strikes in the Glenn Pool field a few miles south. This view of the early business district and surrounding streets shows a community that was still building its brick storefronts and churches as it grew.
