Ash Fork, in northern Arizona Territory, grew up around the railroad tracks, and the Hotel Escalante served a town whose economy rested on passing trains and the travelers they carried. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of towns, rail lines and scenic sites across the country in the early 1900s, made this photograph around 1908, although that date comes from an unverified caption card. Views like this one show how small western stops presented themselves to rail passengers, with the hotel front often serving as the first impression of the place.
