Coronado Beach, across the bay from San Diego, is home to the Hotel Coronado, the sprawling wood-frame resort pictured in this stereograph issued around 1912 by the Stereo Travel Company of Corona, New York. The hotel opened in 1888 and was among the largest wooden buildings in the country when it was built, drawing winter guests and well-known visitors from across the nation. Stereo cards like this one, viewed through a hand stereoscope, gave armchair travelers a three-dimensional look at resorts they might never see in person.
