The Hotel del Coronado, rising on the sands of Coronado Beach across the bay from San Diego, is the subject here. Opened in 1888, the sprawling Victorian resort, with its turrets, gabled roofs and wide verandas, was built to draw well-to-do visitors to Southern California's mild coast. This color print uses the photochrom process, which combined a photographic negative with several hand-prepared stone plates to give the scene its soft, painted look. Dating from about 1900, it shows the hotel during its early years as a fashionable winter retreat.
