The Hotel del Monte stood on the Monterey Peninsula, a resort the Southern Pacific Railroad built in the early 1880s to draw wealthy travelers to the Pacific coast. Its grounds, with broad lawns and tall pines, made it one of the best-known luxury hotels in the West. This photochrom print, a color process developed in Switzerland and widely used by the Detroit Publishing Company, was copyrighted in April 1898 and shows the hotel as tourists of the period would have seen it. Such prints were popular souvenirs, and they preserve the look of the resort's grounds at the height of its fame.
