Hotel del Telégrafo, listed at Calle de la Habana no. 108, is the particular subject here, a hotel in Havana that took its name from the telegraph, a then-new technology that was reshaping commerce and travel across Cuba. The print was made by the firm of C.D. Fredricks y Daries, whose address appears on the mount and suggests a commercial studio working in the city's busy streets. Around 1860, Havana was a major port and the Spanish colony's administrative center, and photographers there produced street views and building portraits for travelers and merchants. Views like this one record the storefronts and signage of an everyday commercial district.
