Few pictures in this set show a hotel with its lakeside beach in the foreground, and this one looks north along the shore toward the Hotel Champlain. The image is dated to about August 16, 1890, and was photographed by Seneca Ray Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, whose views of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain were widely sold as stereographs and prints. Summer resort hotels like this one drew city visitors who came by steamboat and rail to spend weeks on the water, so the beach and bathers show the leisure that such hotels were built to offer. The record's details are unverified, so the exact location and date are best read as the caption card's account.
