Few hotels in Manhattan sat as close to a major rail hub as the Belmont, which stood at Park Avenue and 42nd Street beside Grand Central Terminal. This view, dated around 1916, looks west along 42nd Street, a busy crosstown route carrying commuters, carriages and early motor traffic toward the theater district. Opened in 1906 and designed by Warren & Wetmore, the firm that also designed Grand Central, the hotel catered to travelers arriving by train.
