Hotel de Dutton, at the Kansas state line 284 miles west of St. Louis, gives this 1867 stereograph its name. It is number 12 in a series titled *Across the Continent on the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division*, which documented the line as it built westward from the Missouri River. Stopping places like this one sprang up beside the track to house and feed crews, surveyors, and travelers. Stereo cards were meant to be viewed through a special viewer, so the paired images gave armchair viewers a three-dimensional look at the rail frontier.
