A hotel called the Angler's Retreat appears half buried under a wall of ice piled about 60 feet high, in a scene the title places on the Niagara River in New York State. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information that has not been independently verified, so the exact winter remains uncertain. Ice piles like this formed when floating ice jammed against the shore and built upward, sometimes swallowing buildings near the water. The Bain News Service, which made and sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, often recorded unusual scenes like this one, which makes the picture a useful record of how severe winter weather could be along the river.
