Hotel Metropol, on Teatralny Proyezd near the Bolshoi theater in central Moscow, is an Art Nouveau landmark that opened in the early 1900s, and its restaurant, with its famous Mikhail Vrubel majolica panel, was one of the city's most celebrated dining rooms. This picture shows the hotel during the Soviet period, when the building was nationalized after 1917 and continued to host foreign guests, delegations and visiting artists. Its mix of ornate interiors and public dining space made it a natural stop for anyone wanting to see how the city's old luxury culture carried into a very different political era.
