Few hotels sit as close to a natural wonder as the El Tovar, perched on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. Built by the Fred Harvey Company and opened in 1905, the rustic log-and-stone lodge takes its name from Pedro de Tovar, a member of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado's 1540 expedition who was among the first Europeans to see the canyon. Underwood & Underwood sold stereo views like this one to armchair travelers, who could see the hotel and canyon in three dimensions.
