In 1914, Bell Ranch in San Miguel County, New Mexico, was part of the open-range cattle country on the eastern plains and foothills, where large ranches ran cattle over wide grasslands and depended on water from springs, tanks, and streams. New Mexico had become a state only two years earlier, in 1912, and the change brought new county and state officials, along with fencing, land disputes, and debates over grazing rights that reached ranch families and the Hispanic villages nearby. Shipments of cattle and wool moved by rail through the region, tying remote ranch headquarters to markets in Kansas City and Chicago. Local people in 1914 would have known the ranch as a working outfit of cowhands, horses, and wagons, and this photograph shows that scale of land and labor.
