Allison, New Mexico, was a small community in 1916, a few years after the territory became a state in 1912. Most families in the state depended on ranching, farming, mining, or work on the railroads that carried coal, copper, and livestock out of the region. That spring, New Mexicans followed closely the news of Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus in March 1916, which drew National Guard units and U.S. Army troops to the border and brought the Punitive Expedition into northern Mexico. Local people would have known their town mainly by its school, church, store, and the rail or wagon road that linked it to larger markets. Statehood was still recent, and residents were working out how a rural territory with a large Spanish-speaking population fit into the new state's government and economy.
