Fort Bayard, in Grant County in the southwestern corner of New Mexico Territory, sat in the hills near the copper camp of Santa Rita and the mining town of Silver City in 1909. The post had been founded in 1866 to guard miners and settlers against Apache raids, but by this time its most important work was medical. Beginning in 1899 the Army made it a hospital for soldiers with tuberculosis, drawn by the dry high-desert air that doctors believed would help damaged lungs. Copper mining and ranching drove the local economy, and New Mexico would not become a state until 1912, so residents still lived under territorial government. This view records a post that had become a place of hospital wards and convalescent quarters as much as a frontier garrison.
